Christmas at DownHome 2015

It’s Christmas time again at DownHome. The outdoor lights and wreaths have been put up and now illuminate the night. A new Christmas wreath is now hung on our front door. But we still DO NOT HAVE any snow.

Inside, the foyer and lounge have twinkling garlands and the home made wreaths and Christmas decoration including Christmas stockings have been put up. The bedrooms now feature a little bit of Christmas in each.

The wood burning fireplace in the lounge is ready to warm all who come. Sandy and I look forward to your stay with us and enjoy the Christmas festivities that are available in Niagara on the Lake.

Spring has arrived at DownHome

It’s Springtime again at DownHome Bed and Breakfast.  Winter overstayed it’s welcome.

The forsythia is now blooming along with daffodils, tulips and our magnolia trees. I just cut the lawn for the first time this year.  Blossoms  in Niagara on the Lake are currently about a month behind where they should be but warm weather this week should bring them along.  The ice on the pond finally disappeared. This weekend our guests will be able to relax and listen to the sound of our babbling waterfall.

Guests are starting to book their stay at Downhome for the Spring season. We will be welcoming guests from Switzerland and Germany as well as Canada and the US. We invite you to book your stay with us this Spring.

Mumfort and Sons will be playing a concert here in Niagara on the Lake on June 15.  We were booked within hours of the  ticket sales going online. It looks like like the 2500 people will be  attending the concert.  Hopefully more concerts like this will happen here over the Summer.

It’s Christmas time at DownHome Bed and Breakfast

Christmas time again.  Starting at the end on November it was a flurry of activity as the outside Christmas lights went  up. That’s my specialty.

Inside,  Sandy was decorating the rooms for Christmas.  First was the foyer and the staircase garland with lights. Next came the Christmas ornaments ,Santas, decorative  Christmas balls, and ornaments that Sandy has for the lounge area.  Even our bed rooms got a touch of Christmas.

We would love to have you come and stay with us during this Christmas season.  A natural wood fire  blazing away in the lounge fireplace could be awaiting your arrival.

We were on the Horticulural Garden Tour today

Today we were  on the 23rd Annual Niagara on the Lake Horticultural Society Garden Tour.  There were 9 unique gardens to see an we were one of them. It appears that in excess of 300 people visited our garden oasis today

The write up for our place stated:

We refer to this year round garden as our orchestra. There is something blooming (playing) all the time. In summer, peonies. irises, poppies, brunneria, shasta daisies, clematis, coneflowers and ornamental grasses along with the shrubs, all make their voices known. In the shade garden, you’ll find toad lilies, bleeding hearts, astilbe, rubeckia, hostas, ferns, periwinkle, lily of the valley and ivies. As fall and winter arrive, the maples, tri coloured beech and shrubs like  burning bush, ass colour and continue the visual music show and mix  with the brilliant red of the virginia creeper.

They stared their tour in our front garden with the day lilies beside the entrance driveway. The down the side path to the back gardens with the sitting areas and pond with waterfall along with the flowers.

Here`s what they saw…….

DownHome Bed and Breakfast review of Cabaret

Last week we went to see Shaw Festival’s production of Cabaret withDSC00059 Juan Chioran as the Emcee, Deborah Hay as Sally Bowles and Gray Powell as Cliff Bradshaw.  While the story is not a favorite, the production nailed it.  It’s  hard and edgy. The set while minimalistic,  works as a set in the round.

Juan Chioran’s Emcee is worthy of a Tony. Deborah Hay gives Sally just a touch of innocence that hardens as the show goes on. Gray Powell gives a good performance. Worth noting he is also the lead male in the Philadelphia Story also on at Shaw.

This production is well worth seeing.

The Philadelphia Story review

Philadelphia_Story_20

We went to see   “The Philadelphia Story” at the Shaw Festival this past Sunday. This is the screw ball comedy about a very wealthy Philadelphia socialite, preparing for her second marriage to a straight lased guy when her former husband shows up with  a tabloid reporter and his photographer.  The movie version starred Kathryn Hepburn, Cary Grant and James Stewart.

Here Moya O’Connell plays the Kathryn Hepburn character to perfection as does Gray Powell as C.K Dexter Haven.  I wish that they had picked a younger girl to portray the impish younger sister, Dinah Lord.  Her ribald song at the piano would have been funnier if she had been younger.  All in all a really good laugh at the upper crust of society in the thirties.  The staging is spectacular and the costumes are well done.

Sandy and I would definitely recommend going to see this play at Shaw Festival. For times and seating availability go to     www.shawfest.com

Spring has arrived at DownHome Bed and Breakast

It’s amazing what a couple of weeks makes.  The snow disappeared as the temperature went up.  As can be seen in the picture the snow drops, the first flowers of spring, are up.  The grass is greening up and so I will be putting the fertilizer on shortly.  Sandy has already started  the spring cleanup to maker the season.

We had a lot of rain last night so everything is a bit soggy today.  Even One Mile Creek, has over flowed it’s banks.  The Mallard ducks, two pairs, are back and have been swimming in One Mile Creek today. It was great to see them.

Can you believe it!!!  We in Niagara on the Lake, live in God’s country.  We just don’t get SNOW.  If we do get a little snow, it’s just a dusting.  Just look at what we got. These are perfect pictures for January not March
